Bernie Sanders, the 82-year-old progressive stalwart, has officially declared his intention to seek another term in the United States Senate. In an 8-minute video posted on social media, Sanders outlined his accomplishments and outlined his legislative priorities for the future.
Acknowledging the challenging times facing the country and the world, Sanders emphasized the importance of the 2024 election, labeling it as the most consequential in recent memory. Grateful to the people of Vermont for the opportunity to serve as their senator, Sanders expressed his determination to continue representing them.
As the second-oldest member of the Senate, Sanders had kept his plans under wraps for months, making this announcement the last of its kind for senators whose terms conclude in 2024.
His popularity in Vermont virtually guarantees his reelection in November, with strong backing from the state Democratic Party despite his status as a registered independent.
Sanders’ groundbreaking 2016 presidential campaign, followed by his 2020 bid, remarkably influenced the trajectory of progressive politics in the United States. Often seen as a fringe candidate in the past, Sanders has emerged as a key figure in progressive circles, wielding considerable influence and shaping the Democratic Party’s direction towards the left.
Throughout Biden’s presidency, Sanders has held prominent roles, chairing the Senate Budget Committee and later the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. In these positions, he has championed progressive policies, advocating for a 32-hour workweek and a $17 federal minimum wage, among other initiatives.
Sanders has also garnered attention for his outspoken criticism of Israel’s actions during the Gaza conflict, advocating for placing conditions on US aid to the country. As the Jewish son of a Polish immigrant, Sanders has taken a principled stance on international affairs, reflecting his commitment to justice and human rights.
