Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) expressed his concerns about the ongoing pro-Palestinian college protests, stating that they are “working against peace in the Middle East.” He has been a vocal supporter of Israel and recently referred to the pro-Palestinian encampments on college campuses as “pup tents” for Hamas.
When asked on CBS’s “Face the Nation” about the protests and whether flying the Palestinian flag during demonstrations is antisemitic, Fetterman replied that while he doesn’t think so, the protests have not been helpful and are actually hindering peace in the region.
Fetterman emphasized that a valid cease-fire proposal has been on the table, but Hamas has refused to accept it. He questioned why protesters are not demanding that Hamas agree to the cease-fire, which would end the trauma and chaos in Gaza.
The US has been pushing for a temporary cease-fire to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged Hamas to agree to Israel’s proposal and compromise, stating that the “time is now” for a cease-fire.
Fetterman reiterated that the war could end if Hamas released all hostages, emphasizing that the situation could be resolved if Hamas surrendered and sent the hostages home.
He expressed frustration that the hostages are not at the forefront of conversations about the situation in Gaza. Fetterman’s comments highlight the complexity of the issue and the need for a peaceful resolution that addresses the concerns of all parties involved.
