On Monday, Senator Bernie Sanders announced his bid for a fourth term in the US Senate, characterizing the upcoming election cycle as “the most important national election in our lifetimes.”
At 82 years old, the Vermont progressive, who aligns with Democrats despite being an independent, stands as the second-oldest member of the Senate. If reelected, he would be in his late 80s by the conclusion of a potential fourth term.
Sanders emphasized the importance of fighting to uphold democracy and ensure a government that represents working families rather than the billionaire class and wealthy campaign donors.
Senate Democrats face a challenging election landscape this cycle, primarily defending numerous competitive seats that could sway control of the chamber to Republicans. Additionally, Sanders has repeatedly underscored the importance of the 2024 presidential election, particularly concerning former President Donald Trump’s potential reelection bid.
In his announcement, Sanders highlighted an outstanding difference with President Joe Biden regarding US involvement in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
He asserted that while Israel has the right to defend itself against terrorist attacks, it does not have the right to wage war against the entire Palestinian population. Sanders expressed his belief that US tax dollars should not support the Netanyahu government’s actions in its conflict with the Palestinian people.
Sanders, who has served three terms in the Senate following 16 years in the House, holds the distinction of being the longest-serving independent member in US congressional history.
