Senator Katie Britt Proposes “MOMS Act” to Create National Pregnancy Resource Database

Katie Britt Revives Effort to Establish National Pregnancy Database

Senator Katie Britt (R-AL) has introduced the “More Opportunities for Moms to Succeed (MOMS) Act”, a bill aimed at creating a federal database to collect data on pregnant individuals.

The database “(link unavailable)” would list resources related to pregnancy, excluding those providing abortion services. Critics argue that this database would provide misleading information to dissuade women from seeking abortions and would grant funding to anti-abortion non-profit organizations.

The bill would require users to provide personal data and contact information, which government officials could use for outreach. Britt claims the bill advances a “comprehensive culture of life” for mothers and children, but critics argue it would harm women’s health and autonomy.

Alabama already has one of the strictest abortion bans in the country, and Britt’s party is in the minority in the Senate, making it unlikely that the bill would become law.

Britt’s bill has been met with criticism for its potential to eliminate many OB-GYN services and sexual health clinics from the database. Additionally, the bill would provide grants to anti-abortion non-profit organizations, further restricting access to abortion and reproductive healthcare. The bill’s chances of passing are slim, but it highlights the ongoing efforts to restrict women’s reproductive rights.
