A young police officer named Jacob Derbin sadly lost his life on Saturday night in what authorities are calling an “ambush” attack. He and his colleagues were responding to a call about a threatening situation at a house, but when they arrived, someone started shooting at them unexpectedly.
Derbin, only 23 years old and with less than a year of service on the force, was fatally shot during the ambush. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer, visibly emotional, spoke highly of Derbin, highlighting his kind heart and infectious smile, expressing that he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The incident was revealed after police were called to a residence following reports of threats made against individuals there. The suspect, identified as Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, 24, was later found dead in a Shaker Heights apartment building after a standoff with authorities. The circumstances of his death, whether by self-inflicted wound or otherwise, remain unclear.

Vaughn, with an extensive criminal record, had been the subject of a Blue Alert earlier in the day, with law enforcement seeking his apprehension. Court records show a history of criminal activity, including convictions for receiving stolen property and weapons-related offenses.
The tragic loss of Officer Derbin has left the community reeling, especially as it occurred on Mother’s Day weekend and during Police Memorial Week. Flags have been ordered to fly at half-staff in honor of Derbin’s service and sacrifice.
Derbin, engaged to be married this summer, had recently graduated from the Kent State University police academy and had been sworn into the Euclid Police Department less than a year ago.
His untimely death has underscored the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and has prompted an outpouring of support and condolences from the community and beyond.
