In a clever jab at his political rival, President Biden and his campaign have launched a new fundraising drive that pokes fun at former President Trump’s availability on Wednesdays, the one day of the week when his ongoing hush money trial is not in session.
The tongue-in-cheek reference is a nod to Trump’s required attendance at the trial, which typically takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays in New York.
Biden’s campaign is selling “Free on Wednesdays” T-shirts for $32, with a description on the website that taunts Trump, saying, “Trump’s acting like he wants to debate the President. We hear he’s free on Wednesdays. Let’s do it!”
The fundraising campaign is a departure from the White House’s usual cautious approach to commenting on Trump’s legal troubles. However, Biden’s campaign has occasionally taken swipes at Trump over his legal woes.
In a campaign video, Biden proposed debating Trump in late June, bypassing the Commission on Presidential Debates and instead negotiating directly with TV networks. Trump quickly accepted the challenge.
Biden’s video message echoed the campaign website’s description, saying, “Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020, and since then he hasn’t shown up for a debate. Now he’s acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal. I’ll even do it twice. So let’s pick dates, Donald. I hear you’re free on Wednesdays.”
Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records related to reimbursements made to his ex-fixer, Michael Cohen, for a payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election.
Despite his legal troubles, Trump holds a slim lead over Biden in national polling, with 44.8% support compared to Biden’s 44.6%. The fundraising campaign and debate challenge come as the 2024 presidential election heats up, with both sides trading barbs and jabs in the media.
