Senator Mitt Romney, a prominent Republican voice, has expressed discomfort with the spectacle of GOP leaders flocking to the New York City courthouse where former President Donald Trump is on trial.
Romney characterized the display as “a little embarrassing” and “demeaning,” particularly given the nature of the allegations against Trump, which involve falsifying business records to conceal a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election.
Romney’s comments came as a growing number of high-profile Republicans, including Senators Rick Scott and J.D. Vance, Representative Byron Donalds, House Speaker Mike Johnson, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, have appeared alongside Trump outside the courthouse.
These visits have been seen as a show of loyalty to the former president, who is seeking a running mate and rallying the party ahead of the November election.
However, Romney lamented that the displays have become a “litmus test” for Republicans, prioritizing loyalty over dignity and decorum. He emphasized that those seeking the highest office should maintain a level of decorum and avoid “prostrating themselves” for political gain.
Romney’s remarks highlight the divisions within the Republican Party, as some leaders prioritize loyalty to Trump over traditional norms of political conduct.
