In a stark display of racism and sexism, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) targeted Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) during a chaotic hearing, mocking her physical appearance and sparking a heated exchange.
Crockett, one of the few Black women on the committee, was subjected to Greene’s taunts about her false eyelashes, a personal attack that Crockett believes was rooted in racism.
Crockett called out Greene’s behavior, stating that she has never attacked other colleagues, including Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), who has also worn false eyelashes and hair extensions.
“She doesn’t attack her for any of her physical embellishments,” Crockett pointed out. “But she decided to do it to me. So absolutely [she’s a racist].”
The exchange descended into a lengthy debate about whether to strike Greene’s words from the record, with other members like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez condemning her comments as “disgusting” and urging her to apologize.
Greene’s remarks were not only sexist but also racist, as Ocasio-Cortez noted, targeting one of the few Black women on the committee.
“It is not lost on me that Ms. Greene targeted one of the only Black women on the committee for some of the most egregious and disgusting comments and with the expectation that it will be ignored,” Ocasio-Cortez said. The incident highlights the toxic political climate and the need for accountability and respect in Congress.
