A chaotic hearing of the Congressional Oversight Committee descended into pandemonium on Thursday, with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) at the center of the mayhem.
Greene’s repeated outbursts and personal attacks on her colleagues, particularly Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), brought the proceedings to a grinding halt.
The tensions culminated in a heated exchange after Greene made a comment attacking Crockett’s appearance, prompting Democrats on the committee to demand that her words be stricken from the record.
Ocasio-Cortez condemned Greene’s behavior as “absolutely unacceptable” and sarcastically asked if her “feelings” were hurt. Greene, known for her provocative antics, refused to apologize and instead revived her longstanding demand for a debate with Ocasio-Cortez.
This is not the first time Greene has targeted Ocasio-Cortez, having previously live-streamed herself yelling outside the congresswoman’s office door and posting a photo with an assault rifle next to a picture of Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive representatives.
Greene’s fixation on Ocasio-Cortez has been characterized as a “years-long obsession” and has led to accusations of harassment and bullying.
Despite her colleagues’ efforts to hold her accountable, Greene continues to disrupt the business of government with her petty name-calling and childish outbursts.
Her behavior has been enabled by House Republican leadership, which has consistently excused her actions and refused to hold her accountable. As the committee’s proceedings descended into chaos, it became clear that Greene’s antics would continue to be a thorn in the side of her colleagues and a hindrance to the functioning of Congress.
