Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) has filed for divorce from his wife of 12 years, Dr. Debra Miller, amidst rumors of an affair with fellow Republican lawmaker, Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-TX).
The divorce petition was filed on May 3, with a mutual restraining order issued the same day. Sources on Capitol Hill claim to have seen McCormick and Van Duyne displaying affectionate behavior, including holding hands and touching each other inappropriately.
McCormick’s spokesperson confirmed the separation, stating that the couple had been apart for some time and that the congressman would keep his personal life private. Van Duyne’s representative declined to comment. The news raises questions about the nature of McCormick’s relationship with Van Duyne, who has also been divorced since 2012.
McCormick, a Marine Corps and Navy veteran and emergency room physician has represented Georgia’s sixth congressional district since 2022. He has made headlines previously for his unorthodox behavior, including doing pull-ups on the Capitol dome and engaging in a physical altercation with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).
The divorce and alleged affair have sparked controversy, with some questioning the timing and nature of McCormick’s relationships. As the story continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this will impact his political career and personal life.
