In a boost to national security, Poland is investing a substantial $2.5 billion to fortify its border with Russia and Belarus, its ally. This move comes as Poland assumes additional responsibility for Europe’s security as a key member of NATO and the European Union.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the Shield-East project, which includes constructing robust military fortifications, has already commenced. This initiative aims to create an impenetrable border, ensuring Poland’s safety and bolstering Europe’s security.
Tusk emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, “We have taken the decision to invest in our safety and, first and foremost, in a safe eastern border, some 10 billion zlotys ($2.5 billion).”
He highlighted the project’s scope, which includes a system of fortifications, terrain shaping, and environmental decisions to make the border secure in times of peace and impenetrable in times of war.
Addressing Polish troops in Krakow, Tusk underscored the significance of a strong border, particularly given Poland’s history and its current stance as a staunch ally of Ukraine in its defensive war against Russia’s invasion.
This development builds upon previous efforts to secure the border, including a $400 million wall constructed by the previous right-wing government to stem the massive influx of migrants from Belarus in 2021.
However, the current pro-EU government recognizes the need for further reinforcement, particularly in light of Poland’s critical role in maintaining European security. By investing in its border security, Poland demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding its citizens and contributing to regional stability.
