Yemen’s Suffering: A Consequence of US Inaction

Yemen's Suffering

The US and UK’s recent airstrikes in Yemen, totaling over 100 strikes in a month, have shattered the fragile peace in Houthi-controlled territories. Despite this military action, the US and UK remain silent on justice and accountability for Yemenis.

For two decades, the US has conducted targeted attacks in Yemen, causing serious civilian harm, with no accountability. The US and UK have also armed and supported a Middle East coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which has killed thousands of civilians in airstrikes. The UN has deemed the resulting humanitarian crisis the worst in the world.

The US and UK’s goal of protecting international shipping from Houthi attacks is flawed, as the strikes have been ineffective and have not stopped Houthi attacks.

President Biden himself admitted the strikes’ ineffectiveness. The US and UK’s policy in the region prioritizes bombing over justice and accountability, perpetuating a failed strategy.

To change course, the US and UK must prioritize justice and accountability in Yemen and Israel/Palestine, respecting international law and human rights principles.

They must support civilian calls for justice and investigate war crimes rather than obstruct investigations and shield their allies from accountability.

The continued impunity and lack of support for accountability have hindered transitional justice in ceasefire negotiations, jeopardizing peace prospects. Yemenis see the Houthis as the only actor standing up for Palestinians, contrasting with the US and UK’s support for Israel despite its violations.

The US and UK’s selective approach to international law and human rights will undermine regional stability. The Biden administration must choose to uphold international human rights principles, prioritizing justice and accountability over military action.
