On Sunday, a man threatening officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device was shot by German police in Hamburg. This incident occurred just hours before the city was set to host its first Euro 2024 soccer tournament game. The suspect, who confronted officers in the St. Pauli district, was shot in the leg and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The altercation happened approximately 700 meters away from a Euro 2024 fan zone. However, Hamburg police clarified that the incident was not connected to the forthcoming match between Poland and the Netherlands. Earlier that day, Dutch supporters participated in a “fan walk” near the scene, but by the time the man began his threats, the event had concluded, and few fans remained.

Authorities emphasized that the incident is not considered terrorism-related. As Germany welcomes hundreds of thousands of foreign fans for the month-long tournament, the police are maintaining a heightened state of readiness. Despite the proximity to the fan zone, this specific event is deemed unrelated to the Euro 2024 festivities.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser indicated that security forces were vigilant against potential Islamist-inspired attacks and violence linked to hooliganism. While the authorities are monitoring the “Islamist scene,” no specific threats have been identified thus far, ensuring a cautious but steady approach to maintaining public safety during the tournament.
