Jan De Nul Group has teamed up with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) to install big, powerful cables for the Fengmiao 1 offshore wind project in Taiwan. Their job is to connect the wind farm’s offshore station to Taiwan’s electricity grid using their specialized ship, the Willem de Vlamingh.
These high-voltage cables, stretching 45 kilometers and 44 kilometers each and weighing over 8,000 tonnes altogether, will carry renewable energy from the sea to the land. Jan De Nul will handle everything from moving and setting up the cables to making sure they’re protected where they cross other cables.
Jan De Nul Group and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners to Install Cables for Fengmiao 1 Offshore Wind Project
CIP secured capacity for the Fengmiao 1 project in Taiwan’s Round 3 Zonal Development Offshore Wind Auction in December 2022. Located approximately 35 kilometers off the coast of Taichung, the entire Fengmiao offshore wind project will boast a total installed capacity of 1,800 MW.
Construction of the 500 MW Fengmiao 1 is set to commence in 2025, with the wind farm expected to begin commercial operations by 2027.
Developed by Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP) on behalf of CIP, the Fengmiao 1 project will feature 15 MW offshore wind turbines and mark CIP’s inaugural offshore wind farm in Taiwan equipped with an offshore substation. This initiative underscores Taiwan’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy infrastructure, leveraging offshore wind resources to meet growing electricity demands sustainably.
