Ahead of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit, scheduled for August 17, 2024, in Zimbabwe, Harare police are intensifying efforts to ensure order and cleanliness in the city. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and Harare Metropolitan Police have initiated a crackdown targeting vendors, illegal pirate taxis, and touts to prepare for this high-profile event.
The summit will see Zimbabwe take on the SADC chairmanship and host leaders from across Southern Africa for crucial discussions.
To maintain urban order, authorities are enforcing strict regulations on city vendors, car wash operators, and unauthorized taxi services. In a move to keep the city clean and orderly, a new initiative, named “Operation Guta Ngarigare Rakachena,” has been launched. This operation includes a roadshow to inform the public about the new regulations and the importance of compliance.
As part of this effort, the authorities have introduced a vendor licensing system with a yellow and red card scheme. Licensed vendors will be permitted to operate, while those who fail to comply will initially receive yellow cards.
Harare Enforces Strict Measures for SADC Summit, Cracks Down on Vendors and Illegal Taxis
Repeat offenders will face further penalties, including red cards and potential custody, as per the police spokesperson’s explanation. This system is designed to ensure that only authorized vendors are active during the summit period.
In addition to regulating vendors, the police have also targeted illegal taxi operations. A nationwide campaign named “No To Touts” has been launched to address issues related to unauthorized pickups, dangerous parking, and obstructions caused by touts and pirate taxis. This operation seeks to curb the activities of touting gangs and ensure that public transport adheres to official ranks and regulations.
To further ensure smooth proceedings, the Zimbabwean government has also imposed a ban on all public gatherings, shows, and events for August. Organizers have been advised to postpone or cancel their events to comply with this directive, as part of the broader effort to maintain public order and security during the SADC Summit.
