In a strategic move within the Republican primary for Washington’s 4th Congressional District, former President Donald Trump has endorsed Tiffany Smiley and Jerrod Sessler. This decision reflects Trump’s broader effort to challenge Rep. Dan Newhouse, one of the ten Republicans who voted to impeach him in January 2021 following the Capitol protests.
Trump’s endorsement of Smiley and Sessler is driven by his belief that Newhouse’s impeachment vote was unjust, and this issue continues to fuel his political campaigns.
Trump praised Tiffany Smiley in a post on Truth Social, highlighting her credentials and her alignment with the “America First” agenda. Smiley, a former Senate candidate and a strong supporter of Trump’s policies, is positioned as a dedicated advocate for issues like inflation control, border security, and Second Amendment rights. Trump described her as a “tremendous” candidate who would be a staunch defender of conservative values and an effective representative in Congress.
Alongside Smiley, Trump also endorsed Jerrod Sessler, a candidate he had previously supported. Trump positioned both Smiley and Sessler as preferable alternatives to Newhouse, whom he labeled a “weak and pathetic RINO” (Republican In Name Only). Trump expressed his belief that Newhouse’s impeachment vote was a serious mistake and noted that many of the other Republicans who voted for impeachment have since been removed from office.
Rep. Dan Newhouse, who is seeking re-election for a sixth term, has acknowledged the divisiveness surrounding his impeachment vote. Despite criticism from some constituents, Newhouse has reported that he still receives support from voters who appreciate his broader legislative efforts and believe in his overall contributions to the country. He has emphasized the importance of addressing national issues beyond his impeachment vote.
In contrast, Tiffany Smiley has focused her campaign on specific local issues, including maintaining dams, tackling illegal drug problems, and supporting agriculture in Washington’s 4th district. She aims to represent the district’s values and provide effective leadership.
With Trump’s endorsement, both she and Sessler are positioned as major contenders against Newhouse in the primary race, reflecting a broader effort within the GOP to realign with Trump’s influence and policies.
