In his latest episode of “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver took aim at Donald Trump’s performance at the National Association for Black Journalists (NABJ). Oliver slammed the interview as “disastrous,” pointing out Trump’s controversial remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity.
The episode included a clip of Trump suggesting Harris might have been selected as vice president because she is a Black woman and making bewildering comments about her racial heritage.
In the clip, Trump claimed he was unaware of Harris’ Black heritage, suggesting she only recently identified as Black after promoting her Indian heritage. He questioned if Harris was Black or Indian, implying she had changed her racial identity. Oliver pointed out the absurdity of Trump’s comments, emphasizing that Harris did not “make a turn” into being Black, as her father is Black and her mother is Indian.
Oliver also brought up Trump’s vice president pick, JD Vance, during the segment. He humorously speculated about what Vance, who has three biracial children, might have thought while watching Trump’s interview. Oliver joked about a rumor from Vance’s memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” suggesting Vance might have been more focused on the upholstery than Trump’s comments.
Shifting gears, Oliver discussed the commencement of the 2024 Paris Olympics, noting the controversy it sparked among Christian conservatives. The opening ceremony, which included a scene with drag queens and performers evoking pagan feasts, was deemed “satanic” by some critics. The show played a clip of Trump condemning the ceremony, accusing it of mocking the Last Supper and offending Christians globally.
Oliver mocked Trump’s sudden concern for religion, drawing a parallel to Trump’s comments about Harris’ racial identity. He joked about Trump’s seemingly newfound Christian identity, suggesting it was as sudden and dubious as his remarks about Harris. Oliver’s show, “Last Week Tonight,” airs Sundays at 11 p.m. ET on Max, continuing to blend political critique with humor.
