David Dutch, a 57-year-old Marine veteran, recently spoke publicly for the first time since surviving an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Dutch was shot twice—once in the chest and once in the liver—while attending Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024.
The shooting occurred at 6:11 p.m., as Dutch was positioned in the bleachers behind the stage where Trump was speaking. The attack resulted in the death of Corey Comperatore, a volunteer firefighter who shielded his family from the gunfire, and injuries to Dutch and another rally-goer, James Copenhaver.
Dutch and his family have expressed their profound gratitude for the outpouring of support they received from across the nation and beyond. In a statement released through his attorneys, Dutch acknowledged the critical role played by first responders and medical personnel in saving his life.
He specifically mentioned the efforts of police officers, medics, the life flight crew, and the medical team at Allegheny General Hospital, who were instrumental in his recovery.
Following the shooting, Dutch was initially in critical condition and placed in a medically induced coma. He underwent multiple surgeries before being discharged from the hospital just 11 days later.
Dutch recognized the bravery of Comperatore, who sacrificed his life to protect his family and praised Copenhaver, who was also injured but survived. Copenhaver, from Moon Township, PA, sustained gunshot wounds to his arm and abdomen and faces a prolonged recovery.
Dutch also addressed the incident’s broader context, expressing sadness over the political divisions in the United States. He noted that Copenhaver had recorded a video shortly before the attack, which captured a figure on the roof from where the shots were fired.
Dutch’s remarks highlighted the continuing investigation into the motive behind the shooting and the controversial handling of the situation by law enforcement and the Secret Service.
Lastly, Dutch and Copenhaver have both engaged legal representation from The Law Offices of Max C. Feldman to safeguard their interests during this challenging period. Dutch’s statement also included a show of support for Trump, commending him for not retreating in the face of danger and for his ongoing efforts to restore American greatness.
