The Yongwu highway, a crucial 5-kilometer-long road in China, has reopened to traffic after being submerged by the rising waters of Poyang Lake during the rainy season. This highway, which serves as the only connection between Wucheng township and other towns and counties, had been closed since June 25, 2024, due to flood restrictions.

The reopening was announced on Thursday, allowing vehicles to pass through the unique and scenic route once again.

Each year, part of the Yongwu highway, specifically at the Dahuchi section, becomes submerged as the Poyang Lake, China’s largest freshwater lake, swells with rainwater. This natural phenomenon has transformed the highway into a famous attraction, often referred to as “the most beautiful road under water.”

The current conditions have left the water level just above the road’s surface, creating a one-of-a-kind driving experience that draws both motorists and enthusiasts.

Footage from previous years shows drivers navigating the partially submerged highway, with water splashing up as they pass through. This spectacle has contributed to the road’s reputation as a magical and picturesque route, offering a rare opportunity to drive through what appears to be a road beneath the water’s surface.

Despite the challenges posed by the flooding, the highway remains a vital transportation link for the local community.

While the highway is essential for connecting Wucheng township with neighboring areas, some residents opt to travel by boat during the rainy season when the road is submerged. The reopening of the highway marks the end of a period of isolation for the township, restoring normalcy and access to surrounding regions, though the allure of driving on “the most beautiful road under water” continues to captivate many.
