A recent incident on the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos resulted in serious injuries to two pedestrians, who were struck by a drunk driver in a Toyota Camry. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) was quick to respond, rescuing the injured pedestrians and arresting the intoxicated driver along with two other occupants of the vehicle. ‘

The incident highlights the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, a concern that has prompted renewed warnings from Lagos State officials.

The accident occurred near Mayfair Garden as the two pedestrians were attempting to cross the expressway with their luggage. The driver of the Camry, who was reportedly intoxicated, lost control of the vehicle, hitting the pedestrians before crashing into a commercial LT bus that was stopped nearby to drop off passengers. The impact left the pedestrians with severe fractures to their legs and arms.

LASTMA operatives who were monitoring the area quickly intervened. They arrested the driver and his two passengers, handing them over to the police at the Elemoro Police Station. The vehicles involved in the crash were also swiftly removed from the road to prevent further traffic disruptions on the busy expressway.

Hon. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, provided further details on the incident and expressed concern over the driver’s condition at the time of the accident. He confirmed that the injured pedestrians were transported to Akodo General Hospital for medical treatment, where they are receiving care for their injuries.

In response to this incident, Giwa reiterated the importance of road safety and called on all motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol. He stressed that this responsibility applies not only within Lagos but also in other areas, emphasizing the state’s commitment to reducing road accidents and ensuring the safety of all road users.
