Tech Industry Mourns Loss of Former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki at 56

Susan Wojcicki, the former CEO of YouTube and a prominent figure in the tech world, passed away at 56 after a two-year battle with cancer, as announced by her husband.

Denis Troper shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, expressing his profound sadness at the loss of his wife of 26 years and the mother of their five children. “Susan was not only my best friend and partner in life, but also a brilliant mind, a loving mother, and a dear friend to many,” he wrote.

He further emphasized the immense impact she had on their family and the world, noting their gratitude for the time they had with her. Troper asked for thoughts and prayers for their family during this difficult time.

Wojcicki joined Google as the 16th employee in 1999 and served as YouTube’s CEO from 2014 until she stepped down in 2023, citing personal and family reasons. She was succeeded by Neal Mohan, the current CEO of YouTube.

Mohan paid tribute to Wojcicki on social media, remembering her as a teammate, mentor, and friend. He highlighted her remarkable contributions to Google and YouTube, particularly noting her role in the DoubleClick acquisition.

Before leading YouTube, Wojcicki was Google’s senior vice president for ad sales. Reflecting on her career, she once described joining Google as one of the best decisions of her life.

Wojcicki was instrumental in Google’s early days, even renting her garage to co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Google CEO Sundar Pichai remembered her as a core figure in Google’s history, praising her leadership and the lasting impact she had on the company and its culture.

Her journey was particularly inspiring as one of the first women to rise to the top of the tech industry, setting new standards for workplaces everywhere.

Sheryl Sandberg, former COO of Facebook, remembered Wojcicki as a mentor and confidante who greatly influenced her own career. She credited Wojcicki with helping her in the early days of Google and expressed her gratitude for Wojcicki’s unwavering support of women in tech.
