On Thursday, Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and his wife, Barbara, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at a place steeped in their shared history.
In a heartfelt post on X, Grassley recounted their special evening: “Barbara and I revisited the Hickory House in Waterloo, where we first dated. Tonight, we celebrated our 70 years of marriage where it all began.” The senator shared a touching photo of himself and Barbara, holding hands outside the restaurant.
The 90-year-old senator and his wife, who wed on August 22, 1954, have built a family of five children. Grassley, who began his Senate career in 1980 by defeating Democratic incumbent Sen. John Culver, secured his latest victory over Democratic challenger Michael Franken in 2022.
Barbara Grassley, a dedicated advocate for cancer screening and a breast cancer survivor since her diagnosis in 1987, has been active in health awareness. Together, they have co-chaired the Health Awareness and Screening booth at the Iowa State Fair, according to the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
Chuck Grassley is known for his candid social media presence, often sharing personal insights and updates. However, Barbara has occasionally voiced her concerns about his online habits. In a 2010 interview with the Iowa Gazette, she expressed frustration over his tendency to use his phone during church services, stating, “I had to tell him to knock it off.”
