Early Tuesday, Russia intensified its assault on Ukraine with a series of drone and missile strikes that claimed at least five lives, according to local officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russia unleashed over 90 aerial attacks targeting civilians and infrastructure. This offensive included 81 drones, alongside a mix of cruise, ballistic, and air-launched ballistic missiles.
In a social media update, Zelensky posted a video showing emergency services rescuing individuals from debris and transporting them to hospitals. He vowed retaliation, asserting, “We will certainly respond to Russia for this and all other attacks. Crimes against humanity must face justice.”
The Kyiv region experienced five air alerts overnight, with power outages resulting from a severe assault on energy facilities on Monday, as reported by The Associated Press. Ukraine claimed to have intercepted all drones and missiles, although debris from the attacks ignited forest fires.
In his address on Monday, Zelensky described the assault as one of the most severe, with over 100 missiles and a comparable number of drones deployed. He highlighted important fatalities and extensive damage to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
President Biden condemned the latest Russian aggression in a post on social media platform X, pledging continued U.S. support for Ukraine. He committed to sending energy equipment to aid in the repair of damaged systems and affirmed, “Russia will never prevail, and the Ukrainian people’s resolve will remain unshaken.”
According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, the strikes utilized “long-range precision air- and sea-based weapons and strike drones” to hit Ukraine’s crucial energy infrastructure, which supports its military operations.
Additionally, four Ukrainian missiles were intercepted over Russia’s Kursk region, where fighting continues following Ukraine’s recent incursions into Russian territory. Despite these developments, Ukraine is considering lifting restrictions on using American-made weapons to target deeper into Russian land.
