Mark Zuckerberg, in a letter to Jim Jordan, the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, disclosed that he had to remove millions of posts from Facebook and Instagram due to pressure from the White House during the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed regret over this decision, acknowledging that he bowed to government demands and stating that he intends to resist such pressures in the future.

Zuckerberg emphasized that, although the decision to take down content was ultimately Meta’s, the intense government pressure was inappropriate.

Zuckerberg’s letter was part of a broader investigation led by Jim Jordan into content moderation practices on online platforms. Zuckerberg detailed how, in 2021, senior officials from the Biden Administration exerted significant pressure on Meta to censor certain COVID-19-related content, including humor and satire, and showed frustration when Meta’s teams resisted.

Zuckerberg admitted that he should have pushed back more forcefully against these demands and has now vowed to maintain Meta’s content standards regardless of external pressures.

Looking ahead, Zuckerberg stated that for future elections, Meta will strive to remain neutral and resist any demands to censor content. He underscored his commitment to avoiding the appearance of bias or involvement in political matters, signaling a shift in Meta’s approach to handling sensitive content under government pressure. This stance reflects Zuckerberg’s broader concern about preserving free speech on the platform.

In response, the White House defended its actions, arguing that during the pandemic, its priority was to promote responsible actions to protect public health and safety. The administration maintained that its consistent stance on the influence of tech companies was to ensure that their significant power was exercised responsibly, especially when it came to curbing misinformation that could harm public health.

Zuckerberg’s letter also touched on the Hunter Biden controversy, in which Meta suppressed a story about Hunter Biden’s laptop after the FBI warned it could be Russian disinformation. Zuckerberg now regrets this decision, and his acknowledgment of it has been seized upon by Republicans as a victory for free speech. He assured that Meta’s content policies have since been revised to prevent similar incidents in the future.
