Daisy Zantjer, a 39-year-old Iowa blogger, pleaded guilty to poisoning her husband with eyedrops. Initially arrested in July, Zantjer faced charges of administering harmful substances and domestic abuse assault following a year-long investigation. The case began after her husband was hospitalized in July 2023 for breathing problems but eventually survived.
The eyedrops contained tetrahydrozoline, a decongestant that can cause serious side effects like drowsiness, low blood pressure, and a slow heart rate. Zantjer admitted to spiking her husband’s drinks with the substance twice that same month. The investigation revealed that her actions were deliberate, leading to her subsequent arrest and charges.
Ironically, Zantjer had previously written blog posts on LinkedIn, warning readers about the dangers of toxic chemicals in everyday household products. These posts, identified by Pleasantville Police Chief Jo Mrstik as likely authored by Zantjer, seemed to advocate for the use of organic products, suggesting a contradiction between her public stance and private actions.
Zantjer’s sentencing is scheduled for November 7, where she will face the consequences of her actions. The case highlights the contrast between her public persona as a health-conscious blogger and her involvement in poisoning her spouse with a household product.
