Elon Musk, along with his super PAC, America PAC, has taken control of the @America handle on X (formerly known as Twitter) to promote Donald Trump’s candidacy for president. Musk’s takeover of the handle occurred over the weekend, coinciding with his appearance at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Musk’s new bio on the platform reflected his support for Trump, directing users to follow the @America account to understand his reasons for backing the former president in the 2024 election.
Following the acquisition of the handle, America PAC made a significant announcement. The pro-Trump organization is offering a $47 referral fee to individuals who can persuade swing-state voters to sign an online petition in support of the First and Second Amendments.
The petition, however, requires signers to provide their personal contact information, which could potentially be used by the PAC to target these voters for pro-Trump messaging and outreach efforts.
Though federal law prohibits paying individuals to vote or register to vote, the PAC is operating within a legal loophole by paying people to sign petitions. This method allows the group to collect voter data without directly violating election laws. Despite this, America PAC has previously come under scrutiny for election interference, as they faced legal challenges from several states over a different data-collection effort earlier in the year.
America PAC’s stated goal is to gather one million registered swing-state voters to show support for the Constitution, particularly focusing on freedom of speech and the right to bear arms. If they achieve this goal, the PAC could potentially distribute up to $47 million in referral fees to Trump supporters.
This large-scale financial commitment demonstrates the PAC’s determination to mobilize voters ahead of the 2024 election.
The reaction X to Musk’s actions has been mostly negative, with users expressing frustration but little surprise over the billionaire’s involvement in this political effort. However, as of Monday, it remains unclear how the PAC intends to deliver the promised payments to referrers, raising questions about the logistics of the initiative.
