A tragic shooting occurred at Tuskegee University’s homecoming celebration early Sunday morning, resulting in the death of one person and gunshot injuries to 12 others. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reported that the fatality was an 18-year-old male who was not affiliated with the university.

Four additional individuals sustained non-gun-related injuries during the chaotic scene. Following the incident, the university decided to cancel classes on Monday to allow law enforcement more time to investigate the area and gather evidence.

The shooting took place at the West Commons on-campus apartments as the university’s 100th homecoming festivities were concluding. Tuskegee Police Chief Patrick Mardis described the atmosphere as extremely crowded, making it challenging for emergency responders to reach the scene.

In a statement to AL.com, Mardis expressed frustration, noting that a small group of individuals irresponsibly began firing, endangering many in attendance. Some of those wounded by gunfire were confirmed to be students at Tuskegee University, though the specifics of their injuries and conditions were not immediately detailed.

In response to the traumatic event, Tuskegee University is offering counseling services to its students. The university made arrangements to have counselors available on Monday at the campus chapel throughout the day.

This measure is part of an effort to support students as they process the violence that unfolded on their campus. The university, a historically Black institution, typically holds homecoming as a moment of pride and celebration, which was particularly significant this year as it marked the centennial of the event.

The FBI has joined the investigation, offering additional resources and expertise to help local authorities in determining the circumstances leading up to the shooting. The involvement of federal agents underscores the gravity of the incident and highlights the complexity of handling such a large-scale, chaotic crime scene.

While local and federal law enforcement work to piece together what happened, they are also calling on witnesses to come forward to provide any information that might assist in identifying the individuals responsible.

The incident has left the Tuskegee University community in mourning, with administrators, students, and alumni shocked by the tragic turn of events during a celebration meant to bring people together.

As classes remain suspended for the day, the campus community is encouraged to seek support through counseling and to prioritize healing while law enforcement continues its investigation into this devastating homecoming weekend incident.
