President-elect Donald Trump’s Border Czar, Thomas Homan, met with New York City Mayor Eric Adams to discuss how the city, known for its sanctuary policies, could work with the incoming administration to deport criminal illegal aliens.
Adams, who had previously shown openness to collaborating with Trump on deportation efforts, requested the meeting. The discussion focused on how the mayor’s office could assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in deporting individuals who are in the country illegally and have committed crimes.
Adams emphasized his willingness to cooperate with the new administration, stating that he would not be in opposition to it but instead work together to address the issue of criminal illegal immigration.
He noted that his administration was exploring ways to use its executive powers to target dangerous, violent individuals who pose a threat to public safety. This willingness to collaborate marks a shift in his stance on immigration enforcement, signaling a potential change in New York City’s approach under his leadership.
This week, Thomas Homan made a strong statement in Chicago, warning local Democrats not to obstruct federal immigration enforcement. He emphasized that cities must not hinder efforts to detain illegal aliens awaiting deportation, stressing that those who deliberately conceal or harbor illegal immigrants could face prosecution.
His comments were aimed at local leaders who refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, particularly in sanctuary cities like Chicago and New York.
New York City Councilman Robert Holden, a critic of the city’s sanctuary policies, praised Adams for taking a firm stance on criminal illegal immigration. He commended the mayor for meeting with Homan and urged him to fully utilize his legal powers to ensure public safety.
Holden, along with other members of the City Council, has called for an end to sanctuary policies and greater cooperation with ICE. He proposed reopening the ICE office at Rikers Island and allowing various city departments to work with ICE in honoring detainers for criminal migrants.
Since the Biden administration took office, New York City has experienced an influx of migrants, many of whom were released into the U.S. interior by the Department of Homeland Security. Mayor Adams has been vocal in his criticism of the federal government’s handling of immigration, particularly in response to the large number of illegal immigrants arriving in the city.
In the wake of Vice President Kamala Harris’s election loss, Adams criticized both Harris and President Biden for their border policies, which he argued contributed to the immigration challenges faced by New York City.
