Millions of Americans faced potentially difficult travel conditions as winter storm warnings and weather advisories were issued for at least 14 states early on Christmas Eve. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), winter weather impacted large regions, affecting both travel by road and air. The timing of these storms was significant, as many people were already on their way to holiday destinations, making the weather a critical factor in shaping travel plans for Christmas.
The wintry weather posed hazards on the road, with snow accumulation and freezing rain making conditions dangerous. The NWS advised that travel in some affected areas could be “very difficult to impossible,” and that the weather could significantly impact Christmas Eve commutes. Reduced visibility, icy roads, and heavy snow were all factors contributing to the hazardous conditions, requiring caution for anyone traveling.
Winter storm warnings were issued in parts of Alaska, California, Maine, and Vermont, with additional weather warnings covering areas in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and New Hampshire. The NWS explained that these warnings were issued when hazardous weather conditions, such as heavy snow or freezing rain, were imminent. Winter weather advisories, issued in several states, indicated that even moderate snow or freezing rain could cause significant travel disruptions, with snow accumulations expected to range from a couple of inches to several inches in different regions.
The National Weather Service urged travelers to take necessary precautions, recommending that they carry winter storm kits in their vehicles. These kits should include items such as tire chains, booster cables, flashlights, blankets, water, and a first aid kit, in case drivers became stranded. In some areas, the snowstorm was expected to leave up to 18 inches of snow, especially in parts of Alaska, making travel extremely challenging.
Meteorologists emphasized the importance of being prepared for continued snowstorms. Brian Donegan from Fox Weather noted that areas in central New York could see 2-5 inches of snow, while Patrick Osborn in Maine warned of slippery roads across the state due to ongoing winter conditions. The NWS confirmed that storm warnings would remain in effect in parts of Alaska until Christmas Day, suggesting that the winter weather would continue to affect travel well into the holiday.
