Officials nationwide spent four years preparing for potential chaos during the 2024 presidential election, following the turmoil of 2020. While early voting and Election Day saw minimal violence, bomb threats in key swing states caused some disruption. However, the FBI quickly dismissed these threats as not credible. Despite the peaceful outcome, experts emphasize that rigorous preparations and heightened security measures were crucial to ensuring a smooth election process.

In Georgia, extensive measures were implemented to protect election workers and maintain order. Cobb County installed “panic buttons” for poll workers, reflecting the heightened concerns for their safety post-2020. Additionally, Georgia introduced mandatory election intimidation training for law enforcement, equipping officers to enforce election laws and address threats. These initiatives helped officials respond effectively to incidents, such as bomb threats on election night, ensuring calm and swift action.

Former Georgia election director Chris Harvey described the security measures as “insurance” that prevented potential chaos. He credited the preparedness efforts, including training and responsiveness, with mitigating threats and maintaining public confidence in the electoral process. The proactive approach underscored the importance of readiness in averting disruptions.

In Maricopa County, Arizona, officials fortified election infrastructure, transforming the tabulation center into a secure facility with permanent fencing, badge requirements, and enhanced surveillance measures. Undercover law enforcement was also deployed to polling places. These actions reflected lessons learned from the violence and threats experienced in 2020, with officials prioritizing the safety of election workers and voters alike.

Maricopa County supervisor Bill Gates highlighted the value of these investments in security, emphasizing their role in protecting democratic processes and public trust. The preparedness paid off when bomb threats targeted the county, as law enforcement quickly and effectively neutralized the risks. Gates affirmed that these precautions were indispensable for safeguarding elections and maintaining faith in democracy.
