Among the missing are several U.S. citizens, with the Venezuelan government claiming to have detained at least nine Americans since the contested election. Foro Penal, a Venezuelan human rights organization, has been unable to determine the whereabouts of three of these individuals, including David Estrella, who was arrested in September.
Estrella’s family has had no contact with him, and the U.S. government has faced challenges in addressing these cases, citing severe limitations on its ability to assist citizens detained in Venezuela. Families of detainees fear they are being held as pawns in Venezuela’s fraught relationship with the United States.
The regime has also intensified its crackdown on domestic opposition figures, arresting activists, human rights advocates, and associates of opposition leader Edmundo González. These arrests come as Maduro’s government accuses González’s camp of plotting to assume power after the election, which many international observers and governments deemed fraudulent.

He recounts isolation, torture, and inhumane conditions, echoing the accounts of other detainees. Family members of prisoners describe minimal access to water, lack of basic hygiene, and forced administration of medications.
Maduro’s actions have provoked international condemnation. Colombia’s president, Gustavo Petro, announced he would not attend Maduro’s upcoming inauguration, citing concerns about the election’s legitimacy.
Spain has also opted not to send a representative. Meanwhile, González, recognized by the U.S. and other countries as Venezuela’s rightful leader, has pledged to return to Venezuela to assume office, despite the risks of arrest. Maduro has placed a $100,000 bounty on González’s whereabouts, escalating the already fraught political tensions.
As these political dramas unfold, families of the detained grow increasingly desperate. Many have lost all contact with their loved ones and have no information about their conditions or locations. U.S. sailor Wilbert Castañeda, for instance, managed a single call from Helicoide prison but has since vanished from communication.
Human rights organizations suspect detainees are being held in clandestine facilities, further complicating efforts to locate and advocate for them. These disappearances reflect a chilling pattern reminiscent of past authoritarian regimes in Latin America.
Amid mounting repression, Venezuela’s future appears increasingly uncertain. Maduro has deployed military forces, and opposition leaders have called for protests, setting the stage for potential clashes.
