According to Trump’s incoming national security advisor, Rep. Michael Waltz, the motivation behind the acquisition is the strategic value of Greenland’s critical minerals. These resources, such as rare earth elements, lithium, and nickel, are crucial for the green energy transition and national defense. Recent surveys have identified a range of critical minerals in Greenland, including graphite, niobium, and titanium, all of which are crucial for both Europe and the U.S. The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) has pointed to the island’s vast resource potential, noting that many of these materials are considered essential for modern technologies and energy production. While Greenland’s leaders have firmly rejected the idea of selling the island, they remain open to cooperation, particularly in the mining sector.
