On April 2, 2025, Israel announced its intention to expand its military operations in Gaza by seizing large areas of the territory and incorporating them into its security zones. This escalation follows the termination of a ceasefire in March, and Israel’s military actions, including airstrikes, have resulted in significant casualties.
Palestinian health officials reported that over 40 people were killed, including women and children. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the expansion of security zones along Gaza’s border, with a recent order to evacuate the southern city of Rafah.
U.N. Shelter Struck in Gaza Amid Escalating Airstrikes and Growing Humanitarian Crisis
One of the most devastating airstrikes targeted a U.N. building in the Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, killing at least 15 people, including 9 children and 2 women. The building, which had been converted into a shelter for displaced civilians, was struck by the Israeli military, which claimed to be targeting Hamas militants.
Despite warnings from U.N. staff about the dangers of staying in such shelters, many Palestinians had no choice but to remain, as they had no alternative refuge. The attack has sparked further international concern about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The conflict has severely worsened Gaza’s humanitarian situation, with more than 60% of the region now designated as a “no-go” zone by the United Nations. This designation is the result of ongoing Israeli evacuation orders and relentless airstrikes, leaving hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians living in overcrowded tent camps or the ruins of their homes.
The U.N. has expressed alarm over the dire conditions in Gaza, while Israel continues its military operations with the aim of dismantling Hamas and securing the return of hostages.
Hostage Crisis and Escalating Conflict Raise Concerns Over Civilian Safety and Destruction
The issue of hostages remains at the center of the conflict, with Hamas holding 59 hostages, including 24 believed to still be alive. While Israel demands the release of the captives and Hamas’ disarmament, the militant group has stated that it will only release the hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, a ceasefire, and Israel’s withdrawal.
Protests have erupted in Israel, where many citizens fear that the ongoing war may jeopardize the lives of the remaining hostages and are calling for a ceasefire or negotiations to secure their release.
The toll of the conflict has been devastating, with the Gaza Health Ministry reporting more than 50,000 Palestinian deaths, though it is unclear how many were civilians versus militants. In contrast, Israel claims to have killed around 20,000 militants.
The war, which began in October 2023 following a Hamas-led attack on Israel, has left vast parts of Gaza in ruins. At the height of the fighting, up to 90% of Gaza’s population was displaced, and the region continues to grapple with severe destruction and a critical shortage of basic resources.
