Malaysia’s Yinson Production, a subsidiary of energy infrastructure and technology firm Yinson, is preparing to deploy its state-of-the-art floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel—FPSO Agogo—to Angolan waters. This comes after winning a $5.7 billion contract with Azule Energy in February 2023. A grand naming and sail-away ceremony was held on February 20, 2025, at the Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry Shipyard in Shanghai, with the vessel departing for deepwater testing shortly after.

Pioneering Carbon Capture FPSO Marks Milestone in Innovation and Strategic Energy Partnership

FPSO Agogo is being recognized as a pioneering vessel, notably featuring a post-combustion carbon capture system—a first for FPSO operations globally. This technology is part of the unit’s broader low-carbon strategy, aiming to minimize emissions and align with global energy transition goals. During its two-week testing at Lu Hua Shan Anchorage, the vessel underwent evaluations before setting sail for Angola, where it will begin a 15-year deployment at the Agogo field, with a potential 5-year extension.

The vessel’s journey to Angola has been accompanied by strong collaboration between Yinson Production and Azule Energy. This partnership was symbolized by the recent presentation of a model of the FPSO Agogo in Luanda, led by Yinson’s leadership team and received by top executives from Azule Energy. This gesture reinforced the companies’ shared vision of delivering one of the most advanced FPSO units to date, with a strong focus on sustainability and innovation.

Advancing Angola’s Offshore Development with Low-Carbon Innovation and Early Project Delivery Goals

FPSO Agogo will support the Agogo Integrated West Hub project, which includes the development of the Agogo and Ndungu discoveries in Block 15/06. Located approximately 20 kilometers from the existing FPSO N’Goma, the new unit is expected to commence operations by the end of 2025—significantly ahead of schedule. The project reflects a continued commitment to harness Angola’s offshore resources efficiently while reducing its environmental impact.

Yinson Production has embedded a wide range of eco-friendly technologies into the FPSO Agogo. These include combined cycle power generation, digital automation, a seawater-driven turbine generator, vapor recovery systems, and closed flaring operations—all aimed at slashing emissions. With a target of reducing onboard carbon emissions by up to 27%, Yinson is leveraging this project as a major step toward its carbon neutrality goal by 2030 and net zero by 2050. Strategic investments, such as in carbon capture firm Ionada, underline Yinson’s commitment to decarbonizing the offshore energy sector.
