What Is Lollapalooza?

Lollapalooza feature

Lollapalooza may be a strange name, but it is a worldwide famous music festival. It is an annual four-day fest in  Grant Park in Chicago. This happens every year, and people worldwide come here to be a part of it. It was initially a touring event that would happen in various locations, but eventually, it made Chicago its permanent landmark. This music festival is not limited to any specific music genres. However, some genres you definitely won’t miss here include Heavy Metal, Hip-Hop, Punk Rock,  alternative rock, and Electronic Dance Music. It is often in collaboration with NGOs and different political organizations. This quirky festival hosts an estimated 400,000 people every July and is always sold out.

What makes it even more special is the fact that this is one of the longest-running music festivals in the United States and one of the largest and most celebrated festivals in the whole world.

This music festival was started in 1991 by a single individual named  Perry Farrell. It was his farewell tour as a band Jane’s Addiction member. The first tour, with several other bands in its wake, experienced commercial success. That success motivated the band members to keep going, and hence, they stopped at a total of 21 cities in North America. It even made it to the list of “The 35 Greatest Concerts of the Last 35 Years” by Spin. After this huge success, the music festival ran annually till 1997. It was again revived in 2003.

After many years of ups and downs, it was announced in 2010 that Lollapalooza would permanently remain in Chicago. However, many festivals that collaborated with Lollapalooza played in different places, like the Brazillian version, held in São Paulo back in 2012. But the authentic festival always remained in Chicago after that.

The tickets to the music festival are usually a little overpriced, just like any other festival or concert. The general entry costs around $350, while the VIP tickets are often priced at $650. The Backstage passes and luxurious lounges can also be included in the ticket, which costs $1500.

What Is The Meaning Behind Lollapalooza?

This word is dated from the late 19th century, and some have argued about how it dates back to the early 20th century. This was an American phrase or an idiom: “an extraordinary or unusual event, person or even thing; an exceptional example or instance.” This idiom’s most early use was in 1896. It is funny how some people use this word to refer to a giant lollipop. For some reason, Perry liked this name as it had different meanings, and he randomly chose it for the music festival.

Lollapalooza 2022

People eagerly wait for this music festival to kick off because it’s such a big event. As stated before, this festival commences every July annually. This year, the dates for the music festival are July 28 to July 31. All the tickets were sold out weeks before the festival began.
