The tragic discovery of 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham’s body in the Trinity River near US 59 has deeply shaken the community. Cunningham, who had been reported missing, prompted an AMBER Alert on February 15th, leading to an intense search effort.

Don Steven McDougal, 42, emerged as a person of interest in the case and was subsequently arrested on February 16th for an unrelated charge of aggravated assault. His dark blue 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, identified by witnesses, linked him to the investigation.

The circumstances surrounding Cunningham’s disappearance are distressing. Despite being expected to catch the school bus last Thursday from her neighborhood stop, Cunningham did not board the bus nor attend school.

McDougal’s proximity to Cunningham’s residence, residing in a camper behind her family’s home, raised suspicions. He occasionally assisted in transporting her to the bus stop or school when needed.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office, along with investigators, has been diligently piecing together the events leading to Cunningham’s disappearance and subsequent tragic death.

During a news conference, Polk County District Attorney Shelly Sitton announced that authorities are in the process of preparing an arrest warrant for McDougal on charges of capital murder in connection with Cunningham’s death.

As the community grapples with the devastating loss of Cunningham, many questions remain unanswered. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of her death, awaiting findings from the Harris County Medical Examiner.

The discovery of Cunningham’s body has cast a somber cloud over the community, underscoring the importance of swift and thorough investigations into cases of missing children. The heartbreaking loss serves as a reminder of the need for continued vigilance in safeguarding children and ensuring their safety.
