On Wednesday, Republican Vice presidential Candidate Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) urged Democrats to temper their rhetoric regarding former President Trump to ensure public safety.

Speaking to reporters in North Carolina, Vance expressed concern that the heightened language used at the Democratic National Convention could have unintended consequences. “When you tell the American people that this guy must be stopped at all costs, most will respond reasonably, but some might take extreme actions,” Vance warned. “I encourage my Democratic friends to dial back the apocalyptic rhetoric around Donald Trump.”

Vance observed that while Democrats had seemed to moderate their tone following the recent assassination attempt on Trump, the current rhetoric at the convention suggests a return to more intense criticism. Former President Obama and other speakers have sharply criticized Trump during the convention.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) added to the debate by referencing the January 6 Capitol attack, suggesting GOP supporters had aimed to harm Trump’s predecessors. He highlighted how rioters targeted former Vice President Mike Pence, intending to prevent the transfer of power to President Biden.

The Trump campaign rebuked Raskin’s comments, accusing him of exploiting the issue of political violence shortly after the shooting in Butler, Pa. Vance praised Trump for his response to the incident, noting that despite having every right to react with anger, Trump instead called for national calm and unity.

Vance credited Trump’s leadership for any decrease in the political temperature, emphasizing the former president’s measured response despite intense scrutiny.
