Global Focus on Harris vs. Trump: U.S.-India and U.S.-Pakistan Relations at Stake

The world closely observes the intense presidential campaign battle between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, amidst significant global issues such as the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, and the rivalry with China. India and Pakistan are particularly interested in the election outcome, preparing to work with either candidate to strengthen their ties with the U.S.

India’s relationship with the U.S. has significantly improved, especially in defense and intelligence-sharing, under both Trump and Biden. Indian officials are confident in maintaining a constructive relationship with either Trump or Harris, noting the bipartisan support for U.S.-India relations.

The Trump administration notably boosted U.S.-India relations by reinvigorating the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) and fostering personal ties with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This partnership, highlighted by events like “Howdy Modi” and “Namaste Trump!”, showcased Trump’s popularity in India.

Polling data reflects India’s confidence in Trump, but there’s little difference in trust between Trump and Biden. On the campaign trail, Trump has expressed his intention to improve U.S.-India relations, while also criticizing India’s high tariffs on U.S. products.

Under Biden, U.S.-India trade disputes were resolved, and initiatives from the Trump administration were expanded. However, Biden’s tenure has seen some friction due to India’s continued relationship with Russia amid the Ukraine conflict, though the administration’s criticism has been measured.

Harris has also advocated for strong U.S.-India ties, citing her Indian heritage, but she has criticized India on human rights issues, including the situation in Kashmir, which Pakistan closely monitors. Her past remarks on Kashmir are remembered in Pakistan, which views India’s 2019 decision on the region as a violation of international law.

Pakistan faces significant security challenges, including insurgent groups like ISIS-K and the Pakistani Taliban, which emerged from past conflicts involving U.S. interests. Pakistan calls for greater U.S. attention to peace and stability in South Asia, critical for global stability.

Relations between the U.S. and Pakistan have been complicated by political changes and Pakistan’s strong ties with China. Pakistan seeks to balance its relationships with both superpowers, valuing their economic and political significance.

Massoud Khan, Pakistan’s outgoing ambassador to the U.S., expressed hope for a smooth U.S. election process, recognizing the global impact of U.S. political stability. He prays for a harmonious society in the U.S., acknowledging its role as a global leader.
