Vice President Kamala Harris has reduced former President Donald Trump’s lead in a newly updated national polling average, which positions Harris as the likely Democratic candidate instead of President Biden.
The latest Cook Political Report (CPR) average, updated on Wednesday, shows Trump leading Harris by a narrow margin of 1.3 points, with 47.5 percent support compared to Harris’s 46.2 percent.
This represents a decrease from the previous polling average on July 21, where Trump held a 2.7-point lead over Biden, 47.4 percent to 44.7 percent.
Harris’s performance in the polls, compared to Biden’s previous averages, shows modest improvements
The refreshed polling average incorporates 15 recent surveys of hypothetical Harris-Trump matchups conducted over the last 60 days, with the polls weighted by their recency, according to CPR.
These findings align closely with another national polling average from The Hill and Decision Desk HQ, which shows Trump ahead of Harris by just 1.2 percentage points, 47.8 percent to 46.6 percent.
Harris’s performance in the polls, compared to Biden’s previous averages, shows modest improvements among key demographics. Harris now has a 7.7-point lead over Trump among women, up from Biden’s 5.9-point advantage.
Among Black voters, Harris leads Trump by 53.1 points, slightly better than Biden’s 51.5-point lead. Harris also holds a 10.4-point lead over Trump among Hispanic voters, compared to Biden’s 6.8-point lead.
This new polling average comes in the midst of growing enthusiasm among Democrats as Harris emerges as a prominent contender for the party’s nomination.
