Walz, a former congressman who led the Veterans Affairs Committee, transitioned to state leadership in 2019 after 12 years on Capitol Hill. His tenure in Congress, coupled with his distinction as the highest-ranking enlisted soldier to serve there, has positioned him as a strong contender in the eyes of many Democrats.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal also pointed to Walz’s solid backing of labor unions and working families, highlighting his potential to sway key battleground states in the Midwest, such as Wisconsin and Ohio. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi is reportedly inclined toward Walz, reflecting a broader consensus among Democrats who appreciate his experience and grounded approach.
As Harris nears her decision, Walz is being considered alongside other remarkable figures, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. While Democrats are confident in their diverse pool of candidates, many House members express a particular preference for Walz due to their familiarity with his work.
Walz’s political career has been characterized by both independent thinking and cooperative teamwork.
