Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.) dismissed concerns about Vice President Harris’s shifts in policy stance, emphasizing that such changes are a normal part of being human.
In a conversation on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Dana Bash questioned Butler about Harris’s recent reversals on various policy matters, such as defunding the police, advocating for “Medicare for All,” and opposing fracking, all of which Harris had previously supported. Harris has also aligned with President Biden’s stricter border policies, moving away from her earlier stance on decriminalizing border crossings.
Butler, a former aide to Harris, argued that voters should view Harris as someone who evolves and learns continuously. “She is a person who absorbs new information daily and takes the time to consider all perspectives,” Butler explained.
“People should recognize her as a determined leader committed to working on their behalf, ensuring a fair economy, and addressing climate issues to safeguard the planet for future generations.” When asked about her thoughts on Harris’s policy reversals, Butler was unconcerned.
“No, there is no worry about flip-flopping,” she said. “The dynamics of our country are constantly shifting, and the vice president remains steadfast in her core values. It’s important to have a leader who listens and prioritizes people’s needs.”
As Harris solidifies her position as the Democratic presidential nominee, her campaign has been working to distance itself from the earlier policy positions she held during the 2020 primaries. Republicans are using these policy shifts to challenge her in the upcoming election.
