After being passed over as the Democratic vice presidential nominee, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) praised Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) as a strong choice for Vice President Harris’s running mate. Shapiro expressed his full support for Harris, emphasizing that Walz would be a powerful addition to the ticket and contribute to advancing the country.
Walz, Shapiro, and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly (D) were considered the leading candidates to join Harris on the Democratic ticket. Shapiro assured that he would actively campaign for the ticket leading up to the election. He announced on social media that he would attend the campaign rally in Philadelphia, which had fueled speculation about his potential selection.
Shapiro committed to traveling across Pennsylvania in the final 92 days of the campaign to rally support for Harris, aiming to defeat Donald Trump and usher in a better future. Although Shapiro was a top contender due to Pennsylvania’s importance in the Electoral College, his position on the Israel-Hamas conflict and response to pro-Palestinian protests drew criticism from progressive groups and activists.
Conversely, Shapiro’s supporters and critics of the progressive movement accused detractors of using antisemitic rhetoric against the governor, who is Jewish. Shapiro highlighted his faith in his statement, noting that it, along with his family, drives his commitment to public service. He expressed his dedication to leaving a better future for the next generation, guided by his religious beliefs.
