Vice President Kamala Harris is anticipated to announce her vice presidential pick on Tuesday, prior to their first joint rally in Philadelphia. However, the timing of this announcement remains tentative and could change based on Harris’ final decision or any potential media leaks.
The announcement is expected to follow a format similar to previous major campaign events, incorporating digital videos, social media components, and a fundraising appeal. Additionally, the campaign plans to send out text messages to supporters throughout the day to keep them informed.
Harris’ decision follows in-person meetings with three key contenders: Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Other potential candidates under consideration include Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Former Attorney General Eric Holder, who oversaw the vetting process, was also present at Harris’ residence recently, indicating the thoroughness of the selection process.
The selection of Harris’ running mate is influenced by the need for someone who can effectively support and follow her lead, particularly considering her unique position as a Black and Indian woman.
The chosen candidate must be willing to undertake challenging tasks and operate in Harris’ shadow without undermining her authority. This loyalty is especially crucial given Harris’ unconventional path to the nomination and the need for a cohesive team dynamic leading up to the 2028 elections.
The campaign seeks a running mate who can attract a diverse voter base, including demographics that President Biden has historically appealed to, such as older white voters and suburban women.
Additionally, there is a strategic focus on appealing to white male voters who may be disenchanted with Trump but hesitant about supporting Harris. The ideal candidate would help bridge this gap and validate Harris’ candidacy among these constituents.
The anticipated Tuesday rally will initiate a five-day, seven-state battleground tour with Harris and her running mate, although an event in Savannah, Georgia, has been postponed due to Tropical Storm Debby. Harris recently secured majority support from Democratic National Committee delegates to win the party’s nomination for president, with the Democratic National Convention set to begin in Chicago on August 19.
