Kamala Harris’s campaign saw an influx of $36 million within 24 hours after announcing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice-presidential pick, officials revealed on Wednesday. This substantial fundraising was touted as one of the campaign’s most successful days, reflecting the strong support among Democrats for Walz joining the ticket.
Harris announced on Tuesday, concluding a rapid two-week vetting process that also considered Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly. Her decision to select Walz was driven by the quick connection they established and his impressive background and policy achievements.
Walz’s diverse background includes being a Nebraska native, military service, a career as a high school teacher, and serving in Congress. As governor, he has enacted legislation to protect abortion rights, address gun violence, and secure voting rights.
Following the announcement, Harris and Walz launched their campaign efforts in Philadelphia and are scheduled to visit key states like Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada, and Arizona later this week.
The $36 million raised comes on the heels of a highly successful financial period for Harris’s campaign, which had already amassed over $200 million in the week following her elevation to the top of the ticket, after President Biden’s decision to step aside from the 2024 race.
