In a forthcoming interview airing on Sunday, President Biden emphasized that his primary goal is to ensure the defeat of former President Trump, following his decision to withdraw from the presidential race.
During a preview clip of the “CBS News Sunday Morning” interview with Robert Costa, Biden reflected on his initial campaign, describing himself as a transitional figure. “Back when I first ran, I viewed my role as being a transitional president,” Biden remarked. “It’s challenging to even state my age; it’s not easy for me to say out loud.”
Biden further elaborated on his commitment, stating, “While being president is a tremendous honor, my foremost duty is to the country. The most crucial task is to defeat Trump, and we must, without a doubt, defeat him.”
The pressure on Biden to exit the race increased after a poor debate performance against Trump in late June raised concerns about his age, mental acuity, and chances of winning a second term. Consequently, Biden decided to step back from the race, and soon after, he endorsed Vice President Harris as his successor.
Harris has since emerged as the Democratic nominee and recently selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. In current national polls from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ, Harris and Trump are nearly tied, with Harris receiving 47.2 percent support and Trump at 47.4 percent.
