Despite Withdrawal from Race, Klain Insists Biden Was ‘Absolutely Up to the Job’

On Wednesday, former White House chief of staff Ron Klain defended President Biden against claims that he’s not fit for the presidency, even after his withdrawal from the 2024 race last month.

In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Klain acknowledged Biden’s lackluster debate performance but insisted it didn’t reflect his ability to lead from the Oval Office. “I won’t deny the debate was poor, but that doesn’t mean the president isn’t up to the job,” Klain said. “He’s proving his capability every day.”

Klain highlighted Biden’s hour-long press conference after last month’s NATO summit, which some regarded as one of the best foreign policy briefings by any president. This event occurred just two weeks after Biden’s faltering debate against Trump, where his speech was disjointed and he appeared confused, raising concerns about his ability to secure a second term.

During the press conference, Biden mistakenly referred to “Vice President Trump” instead of “Vice President Harris,” a gaffe that quickly went viral and was used by Trump’s campaign to question Biden’s mental fitness.

Klain, a close Biden ally, criticized donors who withdrew support following the debate, stating that Biden had earned his nomination through millions of votes. He attributed Biden’s debate struggles to a cold and fatigue from overseas travel, noting that he had performed well in practice sessions.

Klain supported Biden’s decision to withdraw and endorse Harris, praising her experience and the strong support she garnered as the Democratic nominee.
