On Friday, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced his decision to appoint George Samir Helmy, his former chief of staff, to fill the upcoming vacancy in Senator Bob Menendez’s seat.
Murphy expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am incredibly proud to share that George Samir Helmy will be appointed to represent New Jersey in the United States Senate following Senator Menendez’s resignation.” He described Helmy as “the ideal leader” for the role, highlighting that he possesses unparalleled experience in New Jersey’s political landscape.
Senator Menendez, who will officially resign from his position on Tuesday, submitted his resignation letter last month after being convicted of bribery and acting as a foreign agent. Menendez defended his record, asserting, “I have never violated my public oath or acted as a foreign agent; I have always been a patriot for my country.”
Murphy commented on Menendez’s departure, noting that although Menendez achieved many successes, his legacy will be tainted by prioritizing personal interests over public service.
Expressing his gratitude, Helmy acknowledged the trust Governor Murphy has placed in him, saying, “I am honored by the governor’s confidence in my ability to assume this remarkable role and responsibility.” He pledged to serve effectively as New Jersey’s second voice in the Democratic Caucus, working under Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on critical upcoming issues.
