In a recent interview with LGBTQ Nation, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) voiced concerns about the increasing threats facing the LGBTQ community despite the current political climate. Garcia, who openly identifies as gay, stressed the urgency of addressing these threats, emphasizing the need for vigorous efforts to win the White House, flip the House of Representatives, and organize effectively at the state level.
Garcia, a member of the Congressional Equality Caucus, was elected in the 2022 midterms and has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights. He underscored the importance of having more openly LGBTQ members in Congress, calling for increased representation of individuals who are unapologetically committed to advocating for LGBTQ issues.
“We need a lot more folks that are aggressive, that stand up for the community,” Garcia said, highlighting the need for more voices championing trans rights, healthcare, and protection against attacks on the LGBTQ community.
Recent data from GLAAD reveals a slight decline in support for LGBTQ rights among non-LGBTQ adults, with approval dropping from 84 percent to 80 percent between 2023 and 2024. GLAAD’s president, Sarah Kate Ellis, noted that while final acceptance remains high, there are serious concerns about threats to progress and fundamental freedoms.
The rise in right-wing attacks on the transgender community, including restrictions on gender-affirming care and sports participation, underscores the ongoing challenges. The Williams Institute reported that 93 percent of transgender teens live in states with laws or proposed measures restricting their access to essential services and facilities.
