Whitmer Deflects Focus on Price Gouging Plan Specifics, Says Public Overthinking

Gretchen Whitmer Governor of Michigan

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer addressed the recent criticism of the Harris-Walz campaign‘s price-gouging plan on Sunday, suggesting that the backlash is overblown. Whitmer, who co-chairs the Democrats’ campaign, remarked on NBC News’s “Meet the Press” that some are over-interpreting the specifics of the plan.

Whitmer emphasized that Harris is committed to increasing affordable housing and ensuring healthcare remains accessible and affordable, underscoring her role in protecting Obamacare. She noted that millions in Michigan now have healthcare due to these efforts, which she argued is at risk from opposition like Donald Trump’s, potentially adding financial burdens on people.

Whitmer says Harris’s economic policies aim to balance business growth with protecting consumers from corporate exploitation

Highlighting Harris’s economic vision, Whitmer described it as laying down “broad strokes” that demonstrate an understanding of the struggles Americans face. She stressed that Harris is intent on helping people retain more of their earnings, directly countering the Washington Post Editorial Board’s critique of the plan as mere “gimmicks.”

Whitmer defended the campaign’s stance, arguing that it reflects Harris’s commitment to consumer protection, ensuring that Americans can get ahead while holding corporations accountable. She articulated the importance of balancing business growth with consumer protection, making clear that companies shouldn’t exploit consumers just to boost profits.

When asked if the plan was more than just a political move, Whitmer asserted that any initiative aimed at keeping more money in Americans’ pockets is valuable. She advocated for ongoing discussions to ensure the economy benefits everyone.
