Recent Republican attacks on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s military record have drawn comparisons to the 2004 Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign against then-Senator John Kerry. However, political analysts suggest that these attacks may not be as impactful this time due to the current media landscape and Walz’s extensive military service.
The GOP’s campaign questioning Kerry’s military honors mirrors recent criticisms targeting Walz, especially after Vice President Harris named him as her running mate. Critics have scrutinized Walz’s Army National Guard service, including the timing of his retirement, his rank, and past descriptions of his combat experiences.
Political scientist John Geer noted the context of the 2004 Swift Boat ads, highlighting that political ads once dominated media narratives, a dynamic that has shifted with today’s digital platforms. Kerry’s campaign struggled against Republican ads casting doubt on his Vietnam War service, a situation exacerbated by his lack of response.
Walz, unlike Kerry, is not a presidential candidate, and Harris’s campaign has countered the “stolen valor” accusations. Geer believes that Walz’s 24 years of service will likely diminish the impact of these attacks. During a speech to the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union, Walz defended his service record, emphasizing his pride and respect for all who serve.
Two decades ago, Kerry’s campaign was caught off guard by the swift and damaging attacks, which were spearheaded by Chris LaCivita. LaCivita has revived similar tactics against Walz, claiming the allegations were never disproven.
The Harris campaign has quickly refuted criticisms, including a 2018 video where Walz discussed gun violence. The Harris campaign responded last week, clarifying that Walz misspoke and expressing his respect for other veterans. GOP lawmakers, including vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance, have also questioned Walz’s military retirement timing and rank, but these claims conflict with official records.
Walz’s military service and rank have been defended and updated by the Harris campaign. Geer and Bennett emphasize that Walz’s clean image makes these attacks less likely to succeed. Vance plans to continue focusing on military issues, criticizing the Harris-Biden administration’s handling of military recruitment and policy.
